Got an email the other day from Solo Performance and they had an link to a new tire from BF Goodrich. Its another extreme performance tire for 2013 and perhaps deserves a second look. So here is some links and following info about the tire to help people get ready for 2013.

Tread pattern scares me for the rainy days. Which is one thing I need to know about for a street tire.

Slow down in the rain... there problem solved :silly:

But I am with you too, it looks promising for dry with the big tread blocks on the outside edge, but I am going to be curious how it does in the rain.

Treads can be deceiving.

At the last track day at ledges in the cold and pouring rain my r888's were amazing. No hydro planing even at 120+ down the back streach. Looking at the pattern I thought they would suck in those conditions.

You can say that again Nick. F1 rain tires are crazy looking really. If you didn't know better you would think they are snow tires lol. Maybe these will be great in the rain even though they look "iffy"

Yeah I'll give you that, no fun in slowing down lol.

I found a tire test that was done and figured it be worth sharing. I dont really read alot into these because BFG paid for them to come there and test it so nobody is going to say they sucked. But it is a good read to see what the tire is about.

Just noticed this last post. Rivals suck in the rain. They don't launch either. Everywhere else is good.

So now that you had a good bit of quality time with your Rivals Nick, What's your review?
I need a new set of road tires for the Stook and on tirerack a set of 4 255/40/17:

Hankook RS3=$616
Dunlop ZII =$704
BFG Rivals =$808

Are they worth it?

They're a good all around tire. But I won't be buying them again. I've only had Z1's and never had RS3's. The RS3 is what I'm going for next.

If you get Rivals and youre running on a hot day, might want to think about a sprayer. They don't get rid of heat well.
I'll also reinnerate how bad they launch. I had to at really low RPM to keep them from spinning all th way through 1st.

Huh...I haven't had problems launching :flamedevil:

I've been running the Rivals and I don't have any complaints performance wise. I think they are plenty grippy, and have been wearing pretty well. I've got a bunch of autocrosses on them and a couple thousand miles and they still look good. I bought them because at the time, RS3's were back ordered and z2's were around $100-150 more expensive. Now, they are almost the same price. Tire pricing is weird. Apparently Dunlop realized the z2's were too expensive and lowered the price. I've heard the bridgestone RE-11A is a decent tire and I think heard they were better in the wet. I don't have anything to back that up tho. I think I can echo Nick's complaint about being scary in the rain. Driving the other night in the rain was a little nerve racking, but it could have just been in my head.

If I were buying again for my all out street tire effort, I would first look for the RS3 and then the Rival (because they have contingency). For just daily driving and casual autocross, I wouldn't get the RS3 due to tread life. I would go with either the Rival or Z2. For RWD S2000, I might lean towards the Z2, but that's just because the Rivals supposedly don't launch well (heard that from more than just nick). But really, I would just buy which ever is cheaper. I think overall grip between the 2 is really close.

Personally I like the RS3's for the lack of attention they require. They love getting hot! My times are always very noticeably better when I have a codriver and can keep them warm. Also, just as an FYI next year's RS3's are going to a 200 Treadwear along with the ZII's and SCCA's street tire requirements, but unsure on really how much that's going to help tire life.

I would buy the RS3's again but they are absolute SH!T when it's cold out. They get hard as rock and I spin them easily under normal driving conditions when cold. And thats coming from a honda with Virtually nonexistant torque.

I think I am leaning towards the ZII's for next season as I usually don't have a codriver to really keep them as warm as they want to be.

My ZIIs are by far the best launching tire I have had. Auto-x, street, strip, anywhere. I have had mine out on the drag strip and actually they stuck well enough that I ended up breaking a drive shaft with them. Spun the u joint right out of the yoke. Normally it just blows the tires off.

Had z1s got ZIIs and I think they are better.

Ive had both Z1 and Z2 on the S. I love both tires. I happened to come across another set of AP2 wheels which I was in the market for that happened to be wrapped in a brand new set of Rivals. I only drove on them for a week back in the summer. Initially they felt stiffer than the Z2's on turn in. Im kind of nervous because I've read both good and bad things about them. I've never had anything else other than Dunlops on the S2000, so it will be a good way to compare the two.
